About
us
Sails is situated at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, enjoying a particularly peaceful and tranquil position. The gardens are outstanding and have featured in a garden walk. In addition to the many varieties of native trees, shrubs, flowers and some wonderful succulents, there is a magnificent stand of proteas, a rose garden and majestic Norfolk pines. The garden also features some charming sculpture plus pebble and flagstone paths as well as a pretty sundial, with its mosaic of pebbles and shells. |

Where we are
Coming from the Bay of Islands on State Highway 10, pass the turn offs for Mangonui township and then, after the fire station, turn right into Kupe Road - we are at the very bottom. Coming from Kaitaia and Awanui on State Highway 10, pass the Coopers Beach Shopping Centre, and the beach access, and we are the first turning on the left. Here is an enlarged view of the map. |

History of the house |
||||||||||||
When the Knight family purchased the property in 1986, it was beginning to show its age. Since then, they have tamed the garden and rebuilt the house, adding the holiday apartment. They have also, with the blessing of the authorities, planted native trees and shrubs over the foreshore reserve which runs between the house and the sea. This has created a seamless whole with the gardens. There is a pathway from the apartment through the gardens and right on to the beach. The name Sails was chosen to reflect Cliff and Jennifer's love of the sea and also the magnificent sight of the flotillas of craft often to be seen sailing in the bay. |
